Delhi is a vibrant, thriving city that is home to a variety of industries suited to fresher employment. While the market is extremely competitive, opportunities can be found for the dedicated job seeker, particularly in the government, IT and e-commerce sectors. Many Indian start-ups, as well as multinational companies, are based here.

Finding a Fresher Job in Delhi 

The job market in Delhi for freshers is extremely competitive, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Openings can be found across many industries. The government, IT and e-commerce sectors may be the best places to start searching. 

For government jobs, the Delhi government has created a new portal in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide assistance to job seekers. For jobs with the Central Government, head to the handy Ministry of Labour & Employment’s centralised list of individual recruitment pages.

For private-sector jobs, the most sought-after employers across several industries include, but are far from limited to:

• Tata Consultancy Services (TCS): Sought after by IT freshers, TCS is part of the globe-spanning TATA Group. TCS is renowned for hosting the world’s largest computer programming competition, which offers winners cash prizes as well as internships.
• Infosys: About equally sought after as TCS by freshers, Infosys was founded in Pune in 1981 and is now a global name. For Indian engineering freshers, Infosys offers Hackwith Infy, a coding competition also offering both prizes of cash and a pre-placement interview for a Power Programmer role.
• Wipro: Another well-regarded Indian multinational corporation, the 2013-founded Wipro hires freshers for consulting, IT, and business process services. 
• MakeMyTrip: India’s leading online travel company took a hit during the pandemic, but notably employees who offered voluntary pay-cuts were paid back, an indicator perhaps of why employees rate the work culture here so highly.
• Flipkart: Beginning as a home-grown online bookstore and transforming into an Indian e-commerce giant, employees give a big thumbs up to the work environment here. 

Bear in mind that Delhi comprises not just New Delhi, but the wider National Capital Region—including Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Noida—with further job opportunities here. 

Applying 

There is no hard and fast rule for how employers recruit freshers. Identify who you would like to work for, and check the careers page of their website to find out how to apply. Sometimes you can apply directly, but Delhi employers may also recruit freshers by:

• Meeting students on campus. This is a popular way for larger employers to recruit, but it’s not the only way.
• Online portals. • Social networks. Follow companies on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but use your real-life contacts, too. If you already know someone working for the company you would like to work for, see if that company accepts referrals from existing employees. 
• Walk-in interviews. Company websites will announce when and where these are held. 
• Job fairs. These are useful as you can meet several employers under one roof to share your resume. Be sure to follow up afterwards.
• Cold call. Research the right person to contact, drop them an email with your resume, and let them know of your enthusiasm for a job.

On the Job as a Fresher in Delhi 

Pay and conditions in Delhi compare well to elsewhere in India. Living in the capital might have its challenges, but it also has its rewards.

Pay Expectations 

The average monthly salary for a fresher in Delhi is around ₹20,000, slightly higher than the national average of ₹17,000. More sought-after employers may offer higher starting salaries. TCS, for example, offers up to ₹31,000 per month to freshers across India.

Working Hours 

The working week for office employees is typically 48 hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm. Anecdotally, however, employees report varying ranges of working hours, often even within the same company. It’s probably best to clarify expectations as part of your employment process.

Life in Delhi

Vibrant, densely populated Delhi is one of the oldest cities in the world, now home to cosmopolitan, rich culture, with lots to do and see. Delhi boasts highly regarded universities, too, so opportunities for postgraduate study here are excellent. 

However, Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world. Getting around can be challenging, so it can be wise to find a job before finding a place to live. Commuting via the Delhi Metro can save time.
