Patrick Cain

Graduate, Corporate Affairs at ASIC at Australian Securities and Investments Commission

6.15 AM

Wake up at home. Roll out of bed and go for a run. This gets my brain active and prepared for the day.

7.00 AM

Have a shower, eat breakfast and get ready for work. I walk to the office. Being located on Market Street has its perks.

8.30 AM

I arrive at work. I check emails, and write my to-do list for the day, including ongoing work and meetings. These tasks include managing our intranet. Our media team prepares a summary of media coverage and I publish this to our intranet.

9.00 AM

I get a coffee with my Corporate Affairs colleagues. We talk about work for the day and discuss opportunities and challenges.

9.15 AM

A team at ASIC released a report a week ago. Using Google Analytics, I find how many people read the report and how many downloaded it. I go to our social media profiles and analyse the reach of our social media posts. I send this information to the team member responsible for the report.

10.15 AM

My manager and I are compiling an organisation-wide newsletter that Corporate Affairs sends monthly to staff. I summarise important reminders, recaps of events and deadlines that are relevant for everyone at ASIC.

11.00 AM

ASIC hosts a conference called the ASIC Annual Forum. As part of this, we welcome many interesting guest speakers. A colleague and I spend time brainstorming possible topics for potential episodes of the ASIC Podcast and work on questions for the people we have invited to the event.

12.30 PM

I take a break for lunch. After lunch I take a walk in Hyde Park to recharge for the afternoon.

1.30 PM

I sit down with my manager for our weekly ‘work in progress’ catch-up. These are relaxed meetings, where I can discuss my workload and ask questions. It also gives him the opportunity to provide me with feedback and talk about upcoming priorities.

2.30 PM

I meet with ASIC’s Diversity and Inclusion Manager. She is writing a new strategy and wants to workshop some of the communications material. We spend time working out how to articulate the strategy most effectively, troubleshooting concepts and brainstorming ideas.

4.30 PM

I catch-up on emails, publish content to our intranet and prepare for meetings I have tomorrow.

5.00 PM

End of the working day. I head to the gym. Exercise is a good way to decompress after a day at work.

6.30 PM

I go home and make dinner. I spend my time preparing for the next day and relaxing – reading, listening to music and watching TV.

10.00 PM

I go to sleep.
