Where did you grow up? Can you tell us about an experience that has shaped your career path?

I grew up and lived in three countries: China, Singapore and finally settling in Australia. It was quite an experience moving from the bustling city of Shijiazhuang to suburban Melbourne. During university, I participated in an International Human Rights Law Program in Geneva, ran by Murdoch University. I was exposed to issues such as Australia’s obligations in human rights as well as international organisations including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the complexities surrounding them.

What was your interview process like? What kind of questions were you asked?

I participated in an assessment centre, which consisted of activities including a group problem-solving discussion, an individual panel interview and a written exercise. The panel interview focused on behavioural-style questions. 

It’s a good idea to do preliminary research prior to the interview to gain an understanding of the projects and work the Department is responsible for.

What does your employer do?

The Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities is the Commonwealth portfolio agency that plans and administers major infrastructure projects and regional development policies and programs. 

What are your areas of responsibility?

The Office of Future Transport Technology is the single point of contact for Commonwealth agencies, industry and research bodies to drive policy and reform implementation to ensure automated vehicles are safe, consider future infrastructure needs and support Australian companies in taking advantage of new commercial opportunities.

Can you describe a typical work day? What was the last thing you worked on?

On a day-to-day basis, I’m involved in preparing various briefings on transport technology trends, drafting briefs to ministers, correspondence, legal research and collaborating with other team members across the Department on projects.

What are the career prospects with your job? Where could you or others in your position go from here? 

A policy development role at the Department is a great platform to work in different policy areas both within the Department as well as across the Australian Public Service. 

What do you love most about your job? Which kind of task do you enjoy the most?

One of the things I really enjoy about my job is to be able to utilise my law degree whilst still working in a policy role. The Office is currently working to ensure that regulatory settings in Australia are nationally consistent, and the ability to interpret legislation is advantageous in this respect. It’s also very exciting to work in an area that gains a lot of media attention.

Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current university student? 

• Focusing on your studies and doing well in university is one way to set yourself apart.
• Participating in extracurricular activities and volunteering will expand your employable skills, as well as give back to the community.
• Taking care of yourself whilst juggling multiple commitments is also important.
