Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
There are a great deal of progression opportunities at the lower and middle levels, however it tends to become more competitive when applying for senior management opportunities. Often internal promotions become limited at the higher levels, and staff move between Government Departments in order to receive promotions.

PM&C is regarded as a bit of an elevator. A bit worried about developing technical skills though.

Great progression opportunities if you stick with the program and work to a competent standard

N/A - haven't had the opportunity to apply for anything during my graduate rotations. There are lots of opening (albeit competitive) and you're given a good foundation to apply for these positions.

APS hierarchy makes it easy to know what is needed to advance, and do so relatively quickly.

I am heartened by my colleagues and previous cohorts that there is rapid progression up APS levels but have been told that moving from EL1 to EL2 or SES is unlikely and requires a stint in another agency.

Promotion is very possible as long as you deliver. Hard work of a high quality, good relationship management and networks, a commitment to the work and good teamwork skills are all essential. Lots of people get promoted to external roles then come back - it's a transitory place at a certain level.

There is definitely room for promotion and career progression in PM&C in Canberra I am unsure about any other cities. I have friend from the graduate program 3/4 years ago who are already EL1 levels
