Working Hours at Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C)

On average I work 8 - 9 hours per day. However, during busy periods this tends to increase. The Department offers flex time for overtime hours, meaning that these extra hours worked can be claimed as time off from work. The Department is very flexible about hours, offering flexible working times and accommodating individual needs.

I usually work a fairly standard 9-5 day. Sometimes I come in earlier or leave later depending on how busy I am. APS staff are rewarded with flex time, so any time beyond the standard hours that you spend in the office translates into time off.

I'd be happy to work more for projects I love

We are required to work 7.5 hours. With notice and dependent upon the requirements of your team, flexible working hours can be arranged.

The Department is very flexible, and works with flex time which is great. However, the norm seems to be to regularly work more than 9-5.

It depends on rotation/work area. Most places encourage a healthy work-life balance and some will even send you home early if they feel you've been doing more than necessary. From my experience supervisors are typically very accommodating of flexible circumstances (we work on a system of flex credit/debit). For example in my first rotation I would need to drive back to visit family every fortnight, so every second Friday I left at 1pm without issue.

Quite flexible and reasonable.

Very flexible, I've not had any problems. Obviously this is role dependent but excellent overall.

It is very rare that I work over my 75 hours per fortnight. I am always asked by my current rotation if I am happy to work extra time or overtime. my current rotation is very flexible with flexible working opportunities (i.e. my manager works part time, my supervisor takes 1 day off per week as she has a lot of 'flextime' and I was able to work from home)

Some areas need more hours than others. In general, work is very flexible: you have flex time, so can take extra hours off to make up for days where you work more. However, often urgent tasks come through which might mean you need to stay late.
