About the role
Main Roads Western Australia (Main Roads) is responsible for the State’s $46 billion road network. It is one of the largest geographically spread road agencies in the world, covering 2.5 million square kilometres, with a matching diversity in climate and road user needs.
GHD has been appointed by Main Roads to deliver a state-wide Operational Asset Management Support Service (AMSS) contract. Under this contract, GHD provide regional support to assist Main Roads manage and maintain the State road network.
We are currently looking for two talented Graduate Civil Engineers with a passion for Road Construction to join our AMSS team based in Derby, or Broome WA working with our key client, Main Roads. This is a fixed term salaried contract until December 2021 with a strong possibility of extension.
As a Graduate Civil Engineer in the Main Roads team, you will have the opportunity to gain a broad range of technical skills and experience relating to road construction and maintenance. This is an excellent opportunity to launch a career in Roads industry gaining valuable experience working as part of a team of road specialists.
To be successful in this role you will:
- Have completed an Engineering degree in Civil Engineering within the last 2 years
- Have a strong interest in Road Construction
- Embrace our shared commitment to safety in all aspects of our work
- Have the ability to multi-task and self-prioritize workload
- Have the ability to work as a dependable member of a multi-disciplinary team
- Be adaptable and a problem solver
- Be willing to travel
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian Permanent Resident

The great people, it is a fun place to work. Lots of variety in the work that you do, working for a big company you are able to be challenged and take on bigger projects.
Cons
"Reasonable overtime" is up to 45 hours per week. Not exclusive to GHD, its common in all consultancy environments. Can be a high-stress job
Lots of people, easy to become just a number.
The work is utilisation based - slow periods can be concerning, as you are meant to be hitting utilisation targets
The long working hours when multiple proposals are due on the same day.
My team currently has structural issues re skill levels so that there are very few mid career people to dedicate enough time in developing graduates as the senior/principal engineers are often to busy/expensive to do so.
