To become an independent examiner (i.e. receive acceptance delegation) there is a stringent training program that takes up to 2 years to complete. This training is comprehensive and primarily trains you in Patent law and the role of the examiner. Throughout this training there is a high level of support from managers and training staff and many resources are available. Once you have your acceptance delegation, there are still a lot of learning opportunities available including conference attendance, online learning programs and face-to-face courses in a wide range of topics. My section also has technical meetings to share knowledge and learn from cases, which are always good to pick up new examination tips. IP Australia also has various programs to enable study at tertiary institutes while working at IPA.
