About the Opportunity: Graduate Communications Engineer

Energy providers are investing in new power generating capacity and associated infrastructure to meet their usage needs and address industry regulatory requirements. Jacobs guides our clients through every step of their project: from feasibility studies, energy master planning and programming to design and full-scale project implementation.

Attributes:

  • Jacobs are primarily after someone with strong, analytical, problem solving and communications skills. 
  • They need to be able self-start and work on their own or equally be part of a team.
  • They should be able to operate equally well at a big picture and detail level
  • They should know that Jacobs values integrity highly with an expectation that they will work in trusted positions with clients.   

Technical skills:

  • Radio propagation including modulation schemes, antenna and site engineering
  • Crypto and/or cyber security
  • Virtualisation
  • Data science

Highly regarded skills:

  • Applicant must have a good understanding of not only the hardware layer but a reasonable understanding of the OSI model in IP/EtherCAT communications and configuration of routing protocols such as: EIGRP, OSPF, MPLS, BGP, & LDP.
  • A fundamental knowledge is required of the following communications bearers and/or protocols: IRIG/NTP Clocks via RF, SMOF, MMOF, RS232/RS485, V.92, IEEE 802.11 n,a,b,i, & ac, DNP3 Serial and DNP3 LAN/WAN, Modbus RTU and TCP,  SNMP, 3G and protocols, 4G and protocols, LoRa and IEEE802.15.4, Bluetooth, ISA100.11a, WirelessHART, BLE, I2C Bus & SPI Bus
  • Be able to plan (taking account of link budgets and data-throughputs), coordinate, and with training be able to implement network security measures over various communication bearers in order to protect data, software, and hardware.
  • Design, configure, and test computer hardware, networking software and operating system software.
