Working Hours at John Holland

When you are on-site pre-start starts at 7.00 am and I would normally finish work around 4.00-4.30. In the office, I maintain the same starting time as I am an early bird and I have the support to finish at the same time. As mentioned previously, there is also a need to work weekends and night shifts. For example, last week I have 4-day shifts and then a night shift (22:00-6:00) for a small piece of work.

Long hours up to 65 hours/week

They speak of a flexible workplace but it is difficult with the industry. Our individual teams try to make sure the load is shared and if you have something on outside of work that you are able to make it if possible.

Depends on the team I worked on, working hours differ by the nature of works.

The number of hours is very long in this industry. Also, since you're on a base salary, you won't be compensated for all the hours you will eventually work

Office hours are good if you are based in the office. Project hours (on-site or in site-offices) can be extremely long and include weekend work with little flexibility or understanding for out of work commitments. This can be very difficult to get used to, especially if in a new or developing relationship, enjoy sleeping for 8 hours or have a sports/gym routine.

Hours are fairly long, and no overtime is paid.

On-Site - Very inflexible, 10+ hours a day plus Saturdays (no work-life balance). Office Base - Very flexible. Allows me to work from home when needed and rarely forced to work overtime

Work hours are not ideal as it does not promote work-life balance. Construction industry work hours are long. Hours are not as flexible as other industries

Quite flexible.

About 11 hours a day, 5 days a week. Expectant that you arrive 6:45 for pre-starts with workers and finish at 5:30. Company is flexible but because project operates 24 hrs it becomes important to be on-site and aware of ongoing issues.

My direct managers are very flexible and accommodating.

Site hours - not flexible.

The hours are fairly long, but this is standard for the construction industry. There is a bit of flexibility in terms of getting a few hours off for the following examples (i.e. getting your car to the mechanic, going to the bank before it closes). It is also largely dependent on the size of the team and the urgency of meeting deadlines.

While the work is enjoyable, the hours can be long. Not much flexibility with site work.

I work 12 hours a day, plus Saturday & on a night shift rotation. I get no monetary benefit for doing these excessive hours.
