Our Work Experience Program provides University students with a minimum of 8 weeks of unpaid work experience over their summer break (November 2019 to February 2020). Our program is open to university students in their penultimate year of studies, whose tertiary qualifications are aligned to our core capabilities. Students are exposed to a broad range of engineering capabilities and a wide range of innovative projects that are aimed to develop and reinforce their skills and competencies. Some recent projects have included:

  • Beehive Monitoring - Remote monitoring of New Zealand beehives, applying remote sensors and LAN, Iridium Edge SATCOM device, with two10degrees Global Alerting Platform as the user interface.
  • Daintree Rainforest Power Issue - Apply systems engineering to explore the environmental, social and political issues around the consumption of 3 million tonnes of diesel per year, with an aim to propose an alternative power solution with global potential.
  • UAS Traffic Management (UTM) Route Scheduling & Visualisation - Develop route scheduling algorithm for UTM in an urban environment, addressing UAS safe separation, route optimisation, and geospatial representation.
  • Data Processing, Exploitation and Dissemination (PED) - Apply machine learning to develop object detection algorithms for vehicle detection in image-based data collected from ground (fixed) and air (UAS) sensors.
  • SLS-SA Capability Analysis - Support Surf Life Saving SA’s Technology Plan development via Capability Needs Analysis, using swimmer safety as a focus, but broadening to any problem space within SLSSA.
  • Joint Force Capability Design - Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering to the combined capability of the RAN’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Task Group.

A great proportion of the work we do is in the Defence environment and requires an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) security clearance. Whilst students under work experience placement will not be working on classified projects, our building security requirements generally require Australian Citizenship as a minimum.

Pros and cons of working at Nova Systems AU

Pros

  • They really care about their people. They make sure you are taken care of and really do value you as a person

  • Everyone takes the time to make sure you are happy with what you're working on. Senior engineers are always happy to help with any questions. There are lots of perks (Personal development budget, professional development budget, etc.)

  • Transparency in organisational operations from the executive level down, wide range of projects to work on, great Personal and Professional Development package and policy.

  • Flexibility with office hours, supportive of those who are still studying/finishing up uni, great working environment and friendly co-workers

  • Welcoming and unique workplace culture, meaningful work and generous professional development and training opportunities

  • The people are friendly and fun to work with. While the regular transition between different tasks and clients keeps things interesting and allows development in different areas and skills.

Cons

    • The small size can often mean that there's not much opportunity to get involved in disciplines other than Systems Engineering

    • At times communications can break down. Possibility of getting pigeonholed in one type of role.

    • Due to the consulting nature of the work, there are weeks when the work is slow and weeks where there is so much work to do! I am sure this is a struggle in any organisation. At times I have found it a challenge to manage different work fronts and changing priorities as is the nature of my department.

    • The commute

    • Number of working hours can be a lot, hard to balance work-life sometimes

    • At the beginning of my application, I had some issues surrounding start dates and what was going on. Which was a headache, but managed around it.
