As an artificial lift engineer trainee, a typical day for me would include arriving at the office early in the morning and organizing for my schedule for the upcoming jobs I have. I will then be sent out with one of the senior engineers or field technicians to install or pull out an electrical submersible pump (ESP) at the wellsite with the help of the rig crew. I can also be involved in configuring the surface equipment and power supplies to our downhole pumps and the communication systems.

You can expect to learn in a dynamic environment where there will always be changes to the job program or client requirements, so this will require you to think on your feet and be flexible in your approach to problems. The engineer is required to bring the technical expertise and the supervisors will bring the experience to execute the job. Each segment will have their own challenges and operate differently from one another. The experience and work rotation will also be dependent on the location you'll be working in.

Having only been with the company for 3 months, I've only worked at one of their training locations. My day-to-day responsibilities is a 6-day working week with a mixture of class theory and practical sessions.

In the office, I am involved with preparing 'well designs' for clients. That is everything from the design, sourcing equipment providers, health & safety, timelines, expenditure. In the field, I am on night-shift in a project management role making sure that construction and drilling of the well is being executed. This involves a lot of technical application of what you learn in training and in 'rig exposure' when you start as a grad.
