Application Process & Interviews at Schlumberger

9.2
9.2 rating for Recruitment, based on 8 reviews
Please describe the interview process and assessments.
My personal interview process involved: 1. An online application where your generic information and resume gets uploaded. 2. A 30-40 minute phone interview to allow the company to know a bit more about yourself. 3. A HR interview which asks the questions like "why do you want to work here?' and more specific details about yourself. 4. A technical interview with your potential direct manager. This interview involves questions about the particular operations you will be working in. This is also a great place to ask your manager questions about the company's culture, operations and outlook.

The interview process involved an interview with the HR recruiter, and then an interview which was more technical in nature with someone from a particular product line/segment which the company is hiring for (they can be face-to-face or online.)

The interview process is personal and focuses on the individual. The assessment process will require you to be able to communicate clearly your expectations of what you're wanting in your career.

I did 3 rounds of interviews and all were positive. It was one of the few interview processes I completed with an oil & gas company where it felt like the interviewers were actually trying to scope if me (the grad) and Schlumberger (the company) were a good partnership. It was a two-way discussion about not only what I could offer them but would they could offer me in my career.

What questions were you asked in your interviews?
What experience do you have? Can you work under pressure?
Graduate, Perth - 11 Jul 2018
Strengths/Weaknesses, challenges I've had to overcome, accomplishments, my attitude towards safety, if I would be ready for a highly mobile and fast paced career.

Absolutely everything. The company wants to know if you fit into their working culture. They assess you on some questions relating to: 1. if your personality fits our culture 2. how technical you are 3. whether you work well as part of a team 4. your approach to solving problems 5. how you behave under pressure 6. your adaptability approach 7. Real life examples of you showing their core values.

It was a lot more conversational than your standard STAR interview. There were STAR questions asked. Discussions on my expectations of the company, what I thought field work would be like, how would I handle shift work, how to cope with being away from family when on the rig, what I was doing for my thesis.

Do you have any specific tips and advice for candidates applying to your company? How would you recommend they best prepare?
Work hard but be prepared to be away from family for long periods of time.

I would definitely get in touch with somebody who works at the company before you apply and really get to know what the company is about, including the culture, values, what the work involves etc. If possible try and get out to the field locations and experience it for yourself to see if it is the career for you!

My advice to candidates is to speak to as many people in the company to get a sense of the culture and decide if Schlumberger is a good fit. The interview will require you to identify your strengths and weaknesses as a person so this will mean you should be confident in your abilities and find areas which you think you can improve in. Do your research on the different technical services Schlumberger provides.

The best way to prepare is definitely make yourself be known as: 1. Having the desire to learn (training is crucial at the company). 2. Being adaptable with change. 3. Not being afraid to get your hands dirty. 4. Having self-motivation, because your career progression is up to you. 5. Being able to work in a team, but also individually when needed.

They are looking for people that are more than just book-smart. They are looking for hard workers with stamina, perseverance and level-headed. Try and emulate in your application how you are already demonstrating those qualities of a field engineer in your part-time work, university societies, family, local community etc.
