Pros and cons of working at Telstra AU

Pros

  • Graduates and junior level engineers are given lots of responsibility, which means there are ample opportunities to develop a large range of skills. People who are strong independent learners thrive and can make a name for themselves very quickly.

  • Working with managers who take an active role in your development, who you can trust and act as your mentors.

  • Telstra is on the cutting edge of the network engineering space, the largest ISP in Australia, with an enormous digitization strategy underway, there are things being done here bigger and better than anywhere in the world. The culture is inclusive and fun, the people around you are willing to help you learn and succeed.

  • They genuinely care about me, the employee. From providing opportunities to grow in areas most relevant to me, to the flexibility of when and where I work from.

  • The exposure I have got from right at the beginning. I've been working on some great projects which I know are impacting the business.

  • The wide range of projects that we got exposure to and worked on. Amount of learning that was available, and the ease of which people were happy to pass on the knowledge that they had. The comradery between team members and teams within an area.

Cons

    • As it’s a huge organization, it’s difficult to get to know the processes and teams

    • The organization is very large and sometimes navigating large organizations is tricky

    • Remote teams mean limited hours which you can work with some members of your team - can be a struggle but we make it work

    • Company is undergoing an extended period of change which looks to be continuing for the next couple of years at least

    • Sometimes takes too long to get things done because processes are so concrete.
