Job Satisfaction at The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR)

I research and write sections of our reports, investigate particular areas of Victoria and find out how it is being used and what its key values are, field work to ground-truth what is suggested by research, come up with creative ways to communicate complex ideas to the public

My role is in fuel management - involves in the development of the Fire operations plan for the district, mapping, planning, community engagement, delivery of fuel management outcomes.

9 to 5 at the computer evaluating my previously collected field data. Mapping and visually presenting my data through ArcGIS and writing up an evaluation of that data to be presented internally to departmental stakeholders.

Working in the Gippsland Regional Forest and Fire Planning team, we are responsible for the management of 1.6 million hectares of State Forest for a wide range of users. Day-to-day I can be involved in anything from conducting spatial analysis on biodiversity impacts, to processing permit applications for events or research, to visiting recreation sites currently being upgraded, to being involved in firefighting and fuel reduction operations for weeks at a time plus so much more.

Preparing, responding, and recovering from emergencies impacting agriculture.

My role is very varied. I am currently working on my own project to eliminate single-use plastics from DELWP offices. My role also includes responding to Native Vegetation regulation applications. Responding to customer enquiries about DELWP land management. Working with landholders to restore riparian vegetation. My day to day responsibilities include, timely response to emails, asking advice and feedback from colleagues, liaising with colleagues

I am completing an internal audit on how staff members consider climate change within their role, I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of people and travel around the region by whilst completing this project. I also have the flexibility to work 1-2 days a week with the risk and evaluation team.

Work on creating training packages, meetings and facilitating current training.

I have one long-term ongoing project, and then pick up a number of other short-term ad hoc tasks as they pop up and as the team needs support. As a result my work varies slightly week-to-week, which I love!

Assisted with sowing, in season assessments (establishment counts, plot lengths, disease scores), pulling out weeds''and harvest of plot trials. Worked on a scientific based trial looking at soil acidity at depth as well as growth of Faba beans using inoculants in the HRZ. I have also worked on the communications for a project with two senior researchers. This project involved working with internal and external stakeholders, producing an extensive communications plan and creating collateral. Visiting farms to diagnose problems with crops (pests, diseases, nutrition)
