Mariette Luitjens

General Corporate Graduate Officer at WA Department of Health

If you have an interest in policy and project work, or just want to gain some experience and an understanding of different roles within WA Health this is the program for you.

What is the best way to get into your graduate program?

The best way to get into the WA Health Graduate Program is by submitting your CV and writing some excellent responses to the selection criteria using the STAR approach.

What about timing?

It is never too soon to start looking at what is out there. I am a big believer in creating lots of opportunities by applying for a broad range of positions so that you have choices. It is hard work to fill out the applications in the short term, but you will thank yourself when you are successful in securing an excellent graduate program that will help you to kick off your career in the direction you choose.

Each year applications for the WA Health General Corporate stream open around July/August for the following year. It is a good idea to note these dates in your calendar and start writing early so that you have time to seek feedback and organise referees before submitting your application.

What type of grads are you looking for?

The General Corporate stream is open to students from many different backgrounds. If you have an interest in policy and project work, or just want to gain some experience and an understanding of different roles within WA Health this is the program for you.

How can I stand out?

Having excellent marks at university is definitely an advantage, but I think life experience is also extremely valuable. I completed my master’s degree in The Netherlands, which helped to give me an understanding of health systems from a broader perspective as well as giving me the opportunity to experience life in a different culture. Whilst living overseas is not possible for everyone, perhaps you can join a local committee or organisation which could equip you with skills that will set you apart.

Lastly, do not underestimate the power of a network. If you have the opportunity through your university or other avenues to attend events, such as information evenings, make sure you attend and try to ask some questions about the role and how to make your application stand out.

Anything else?

Finding a graduate job can seem quite stressful, but it is important to maintain perspective and realise that this is actually a really exciting time! We are very fortunate in Australia to have so many well established graduate programs that provide excellent career opportunities, so if you cast your net widely something good will come back to you.

Also, if you are unsuccessful this time around ask for feedback to help you improve on your next application.

What are some key attributes of successful candidates?

  • Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Nobody if perfect, but if you play your cards right you can really harness your strengths to make you stand out. Also, if you are honest about what you are not so good at then you can find opportunities to improve on this.
  • Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. Companies hire graduates because you have fresh, innovative ideas that set you apart. Be confident in presenting new ideas and developing solutions to overcome obstacles.
  • Hobbies / interests outside of work. Having hobbies / sports / interests outside of university / work is important to help you de-stress and give you a mental break from applying for jobs. I teach Pilates and go running in my spare time which helps me to relax and look at things from a different angle!
  • Persistence. If you want something badly enough, you can make it happen. If you fail on the first time, ask for feedback and try again.
