What is our Internship Program?

Our paid ten-week program is a great way to explore a career with Westpac Group and give you a taste of what it is like to work for us. It is designed to ensure that our interns get an insight into the banking and finance industry – allowing you to make an informed career decision. Whichever business area you choose, you will find a worthwhile investment of your time this summer. Plus, what could be more rewarding than the possibility to return to university with your graduate job offer in hand?

Am I Eligible?

We welcome applications from university students in their penultimate year of an undergraduate or post graduate degree that are due to complete their studies by December 2019. We also ask that all applicants hold Australian permanent residency or citizenship. The program runs for 10 weeks from December to February and talented interns will also have the opportunity to be considered for the Graduate Program in 2020.

What is Corporate and Institutional Banking?

By joining the Corporate and Institutional Banking Program you’ll learn more than just banking. To excel at your role you’ll need to develop a deep understating of your customers’ industry and business needs - expanding your knowledge and skill set beyond banking products and services alone. We aim to act as a trusted advisor to our customers, partnering with them across both their day to day and strategic aspects of their businesses.

Each intern will be allocated to a particular team and will work alongside experienced analysts and relationship managers.

The type of work involved may include:

  • Researching topical issues within a particular industry and contributing to research reports and credit submissions.
  • Market and competitor research and analysis.
  • Assessing existing and potential clients including full financial analysis in order to determine the appropriate credit risk rating and resultant lending appetite.
  • Supporting the relationship team with ad hoc requests.

During the 10 week program, interns will receive support from recent graduates as well as a dedicated placement manager to ensure your learning experience is optimised

Pros and cons of working at Westpac Group AU

Pros

  • Diverse experiences

  • The opportunities for career advancement, high performance culture

  • Experience & exposure to different areas

  • Great opportunities for networking Flexible work hours Is customer focus and does live by its values

  • Very flexible working arrangements, good culture

Cons

    • level of administrative processes

    • The structure of the graduate program, requires a little more clarity.

    • A lot of technology work is outsourced.

    • Very few international opportunities. Time it takes to get things done, bureaucracy.

    • Guidance seems to depend more on the team you're in and the people around you than HR. The graduate program seems to be heavily dependent on the stream managers - with little involvement from the wider graduate HR group.
