About this course

The Diploma of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges provides an opportunity for students to engage with concepts and professional practices based on an understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems. The units are designed to privilege and advance the exploration and practical application of knowledges from the rich cultural traditions and contemporary social experiences of Indigenous peoples. The course promotes the capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those who work with them, to provide accountable leadership, advocate for and empower people and communities in their aspirations for cultural maintenance and reclamation, and for effective participation in contemporary Australian social, cultural and economic life. With a focus upon ensuring graduates demonstrate an ability to apply what they learn in a culturally informed and respectful manner, students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills that are useful for work in with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities, or in government departments and agencies, or private enterprises that are involved in Indigenous affairs. This course is tailored to prepare students for professional work and/or further study or research that can contribute to, and further develop effective and equitable engagement between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the broader Australian community. The course is offered via a range of flexible, multi-modal delivery options that include workshops, Learnline, face-to-face and external.
