About this course

The Diploma of Science (with specialisation) is designed for students who are interested in studying science but are not sure about committing to a 3-year degree. This single-year degree provides a taste of uni, and is ideal for anyone unsure about whether further education is the right pathway for them. The Diploma of Science provides specialisation streams which are direct pathways into the second year of one of the many Bachelor degrees offered by CDU, for students who wish to continue their studies at the completion of the Diploma. These pathways feed directly into the CDU Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Environmental Science. Should students wish to complete their studies at the end of the Diploma, they will still receive a Higher Education award. These specialisation streams also provide a pathway from VET, with credit available for students who have completed appropriate units. The Diploma of Science is also a recognised feeder course for degrees at other tertiary institutions, whereby students can complete the first year of their degree at Charles Darwin University and receive a Diploma of Science, before applying to an approved alternative tertiary institution with agreed credit transfer arrangements. One-year feeder arrangements have been established for the following degrees: Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science) at Flinders University; Bachelor of Science (Animal Behaviour) at Flinders University; Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture) at Flinders University; Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) at Flinders University; Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science) at Flinders University; Bachelor of Science (Nanotechnology) at Flinders University; Bachelor of Marine Science at James Cook University; and Bachelor of Science at Australian National University. Upon completion of the recommended study plan for the feeder programs listed above students apply to the appropriate Tertiary Admissions Centre for admission to that course. Please note that external students may be required to attend on-campus intensive teaching blocks depending on the units studied.
