There is a major opportunity for me to progress in my career with Coles, however it just depends on timing and an opportunity coming up when i finish my graduate program.

For graduates you are able to rotate through different streams to gain an understanding of different parts of the business. you are then able to roll of into a position you like if they are available. In terms of promotion possibilities i think it is dependent on what you put out and the opportunities you follow.

There is a clear hierarchy - Graduate, Assistant Category Manager, Category Manager, Senior Category Manager, Business Category Manager. It would take at least two years in each position before a promotion would be considered.

Within some areas of the business, eg Liquor, it is difficult to progress. Team members have been in roles for several years and had no progression. In other areas, promotion is easier, however, sometimes it is about who you know, not what you know. Networking and building relationships is key.

There are many opportunities to "climb" the ranks here. There are ex-grads that are General Managers. There are ex-grads that have been here for 10+ years too. There is a strong focus on building your skills, especially for graduates.

At the end of the 3 year Coles Finance program we will have our CPA/CA and are lucky to have guaranteed employment within Coles as a BA. There are so many opportunities for career development within Coles.
