Career Prospects at Coles

There is a major opportunity for me to progress in my career with Coles, however it just depends on timing and an opportunity coming up when i finish my graduate program.

If you are a good performer, you will get promoted. But it's hard to be a good performer when everyone is ambitious.

For graduates you are able to rotate through different streams to gain an understanding of different parts of the business. you are then able to roll of into a position you like if they are available. In terms of promotion possibilities i think it is dependent on what you put out and the opportunities you follow.

There is a clear hierarchy - Graduate, Assistant Category Manager, Category Manager, Senior Category Manager, Business Category Manager. It would take at least two years in each position before a promotion would be considered.

Within some areas of the business, eg Liquor, it is difficult to progress. Team members have been in roles for several years and had no progression. In other areas, promotion is easier, however, sometimes it is about who you know, not what you know. Networking and building relationships is key.

2 year fixed contract with no guarantee of rolling off into a job

Seems to be very solid. Lots of ex-grads are spread throughout the company.

Roll-off into a position and can move up from there. Lots of roles available

Good work is generally rewarded and opportunities to progress are essentially unlimited

There are many opportunities to "climb" the ranks here. There are ex-grads that are General Managers. There are ex-grads that have been here for 10+ years too. There is a strong focus on building your skills, especially for graduates.

The graduate program enables four rotations - allowing graduates to explore their options and build a breadth of knowledge and experience.

Potential to roll-off within the company & build career development plan.

Too unstable and uncertain at present to say. I'm not optimistic.

I pretty much rolled off into a permanent role within a year. It takes hard work and giving it your all to always deliver high quality work. This gets recognised and rewarded.

At the end of the 3 year Coles Finance program we will have our CPA/CA and are lucky to have guaranteed employment within Coles as a BA. There are so many opportunities for career development within Coles.

An appetite to learn and an ability to think logically in order to solve problems. Must be proactive in your approach and make it known you'd like to learn, selling a story always helps.

Historically there has been few graduates to roll off into the property area

Many people move up the ranks but a lot swap back and forth between rival companies in order to get promotions that otherwise might be slow to come around
