Associate Professional: Banking & Capital Markets at DXC Technology Australia
DXC Technology (DXC) is the leading global IT Services company providing technology systems and solutions to a broad range of government and corporate clients. We do everything from consulting on technology strategy through to building, hosting and running key operational systems for our clients.
My role involves 2 parts – I have an external role as a Delivery Analyst at one of the Big Four banks working on a project that is implementing innovative technology (robotic process automation). I help to manage our stakeholders, track our risks and issues and maintain a library of all registered documentation. The second part is my internal role as the Operations Lead for the Banking & Capital Markets team. This role involves financial reporting, dealing with operational queries from the team and developing our frameworks to be used for financial and sales performance. I’ve also re-engineered processes, migrated and consolidated data whilst acting as hypercare for newly acquired business units and run strategic workshops for our industry teams.
I have lived in Melbourne for most of my life except for 3 years in Sydney. I started my education as a 3-year-old and completed it 18 years later at Monash University. Growing up I played a lot of basketball at all levels up to Victorian Championship grade and I also played the clarinet for a few years. I love travelling overseas and have been to 14 countries so far.
Whilst I’ve always been a pretty good and diligent student, I have struggled with exams which has meant that whilst at university, often my marks didn’t reflect my true capabilities due to the weighting of the exams in comparison to coursework. This made it difficult when it came to finding a graduate position as many companies use an automated system to take applicant details and immediately vet them based on grades. I persisted and eventually got interviews with a few firms. DXC (formerly CSC) was the first to offer me a role that I was really interested in. I took it up at the end of September in 2015, threw myself into it, and I haven’t looked back. There has been a stream of new opportunities to stretch me and teach me new skills over the last 18 months.
Yes, someone with a different background could do my job; however, they would need to have persistence, a preparedness to tackle numbers, attention to detail, commitment to getting the job done and a strong desire to learn.
My job is about the effort and logic than anything else in my opinion. I’m determined to be right, as decisions are made based on data I supply, so I put in the time and effort to check everything that I do to ensure its accuracy.
One of the coolest things about my job is the opportunity of having 2 roles. In 18 months, I have learned a lot by being thrown into positions and activities that I had almost no background in. This has greatly expanded my skill set and given me more confidence that I can tackle new challenges in the future as my career progresses. Combined with the phenomenal support, encouragement and recognition from my Industry General Manager and a few other executives in our team has made for a great start to my time at DXC.
DXC has been through a major merger and major acquisition recently, which has meant changes to people, processes and systems; making it possible to encounter situations where no-one knows how to get something done. I have had to be resourceful and talk to people from around the world and problem-solve to find ways to deliver.
With my job comes a lot of responsibility, there is always something I could be working on but I’m learning to apply limitations (occasionally). I push myself to be better at my job for the team, as my role affects each of them.
