Pros & Cons

  • The collegiality and the team atmosphere as well as interesting and stimulating work.
  • The people, training, facilities, culture and quality of the work.
  • I love the work I'm doing and I love the people I'm doing it with. It's not very hierarchical, which means you get many opportunities to work directly with partners. You get a lot of responsibility working on matters, but are well supervised . It's a terrific learning environment.
  • Work with the best lawyers for the biggest clients. Autonomous experience for juniors with material contributions to all matters.
  • I feel like I can be myself. They respect honesty. Everyone is really friendly. Get to work closely with partners. Given lots of autonomy and client interaction. Given the opportunity to attend lots of events.
  • Sometimes training opportunities are missed because there is a need to complete tasks on a deadline.
  • It can occasionally feel under-staffed.
  • At times, long hours with tough time frames and deadlines.
  • Long hours.
  • Expectation of long hours.

G+T is very good at recognising and supporting high-achievers, and matches the ambition of its workforce.

Indigenous programs; strong pro-bono team; charity drives and morning teas.

Culture

Culture
The culture is excellent, during the day I mix often with people of all levels, who are always respectful and friendly. There are plenty of opportunities to get together outside of work and meet people from across the firm. These are not always over drinks too, which provides for healthier interactions around events like the city 2 surf and cycling charity days out.

Diversity

Diversity
Diversity training is provided by an external firm and of high quality. Female representation in partnership and leadership is much higher than at most other firms (and the majority of the workforce is female). Never seen any overt discrimination in the workplace- it's a tolerant environment

I am often given tasks above a graduate level but I am supported and enjoy this work.

Management

Management
My anecdotal experiences with managers have generally been good. While partners are often very busy and not always available, the time I have had with them has been very beneficial. One of the senior lawyers assigned as a mentor to me was incredibly busy, which has limited the feedback they have given me - I know this is not always controllable, however it has been a little disappointing.

Office Work Environment
Beautiful light, plants everywhere, standing desks, great water views, close to the water to go sit in outside. It's amazing. The dress code is not too formal, also rare for a law firm, and casual Fridays are great. Would be good to move to a "dress for your work day" model like PWC, if possible!

Recruitment
Two interviews, conducted in quite a casual manner. Mostly about my past experience. Talk to as many of the people as possible - this will give you a true sense of the culture to figure out whether the firm is a good fit for you.

Regular social events that are fun and different, dinner and taxis home after 8pm, subsidised event tickets, free tickets to footy (if unclaimed for client use).

G+T is good when it comes to flexible working arrangements. However, it is the nature of top-tier legal work that you will spend lots of unpredictable hours doing work.
