Graduate field service engineer at Honeywell
Why did you want to work for Honeywell?
A friend suggested that I apply for the position because he knew it was something I wanted to do and that the skills I had developed would be useful for the position. As a computer engineer, the role will help set me up for what I want to do in the future.
What does your role entail?
I am a field services engineer in the process solutions team. I travel to customer sites and provide support, maintenance and system updates on the Honeywell systems they run. The computer-controlled systems automate the entire site through the use of servers and controllers. My role is to keep the site system healthy and in good condition in order to keep the sites running.
How does the graduate program work?
Our program runs for three years. During my first year I was lucky enough to be involved in a new project site for Alcoa, which included working in Saudi Arabia. I am now near the end of my second year and am part of the service team, which is dedicated to Woodside Support.
The program is very supportive, including a lot of guidance by former graduates, managers or experts who come to speak and lend support. And we can move into different roles – but that is up to the individual. If we choose to stay in a role, we are offered training to get a full understanding of what the role is about, what’s expected of you and what you need to do.
My current role is a fly in fly out – which means I travel a lot. This type of role is optional, because not everyone is suited to this type of work, but being on site allows you to understand how everything works together.
Pluses and minuses of the job?
Time away from family and friends can be tough. I was overseas working on site for quite some time, but it is part of the job and I don’t mind the travel. There are also ups and downs with workloads – sometimes I struggle to find challenging things to do, other times I am swamped.
Working in a team is easily the best part of the role. Most of my teammates are experienced and understand that I am a graduate. So they do their best to help out. If I don’t understand something, they will show me how it is done.
What skills are useful for your role?
I think many graduates lack leadership, management and communications skills. However, that is exactly what companies are looking for – self confidence, self management and communication skills. Knowledge is always helpful, but a lot of that is learned on the job.
What does your career future look like?
Like a lot of graduates, I don’t have a clear career path as of yet. I enjoy what I am doing now and the graduate program is providing me with a lot of different skills and showing me different pathways within the company.
