I have both Torres Strait Islander and Italian heritage. My Mother’s side is the Saibai Koedal clan, located on Saibai Island in the Torres Strait – our totem is the Koedal, translating to crocodile. My father on the other hand was born in Fermo, in Marche province, Italy.

What does your role involve?

Service engineer in Process Solutions: Service and maintenance of industrial control systems, ensuring plant optimisation and quality assurance to clients. I am customer facing and have exposure to a wide range of sites and systems. I also learn other aspects of design, such as mechanical and chemical processes. The countryside drives are a bonus, and a nice reprieve from city traffic.

What are some of the highlights or interesting stories from your career?

I participated in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. I travelled to Los Angeles with 20 other students with a prototype vehicle to compete against a wide range of international teams. The experience provided a good insight to engineering manufacturing methods, particularly rapid cycles of prototyping. 

I interned at the Ravenhall Prison Project within the Honeywell Building Solutions. There I gained an understanding of the methodology and operations for a large engineering company.  

Do you have any advice for other students?

Spend the first couple of years in your study researching the industry and defining different roles, gain an understanding of the academic and technical requirements to the jobs that interest you. For the final two years balance your studies with extra-curricular (within university or external) and internships. Also, ask lecturers and practising professionals in your stream of study to proof read your job applications.
