We are a globally diversified mining and metals company with operations in Australia, South Africa and South America. Headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, securities for South32 trade on three exchanges, the Australian Securities exchange (ASX), Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and London Stock Exchange (LSE).

Our purpose is to make a difference by developing natural resources, improving people's lives now and for generations to come.

Our people are central to our success and demonstrate our determination to be a best-in-class operator. We aspire to be an inclusive organisation, where our workforce reflects the broader demographic of the countries and communities where we operate.

Our Illawarra Metallurgical Coal operations are in the Illawarra and Wollondilly regions of the southern coalfields of New South Wales, about 75 kilometres south of Sydney. Our underground mines at Appin and Dendrobium produce high quality metallurgical coal used for steelmaking. As a by-product, we also supply small amounts of coal for energy.

We attract people with exceptional skills, who share our values and want to make a difference with the work they do. As part of our team you will be brave enough to challenge yourself to be the best in what you do. We will help you stretch your capabilities, challenging you to constantly seek better ways to do things and taking advantage of every opportunity to kick-start your career.
If this sounds like you, we want you to join us as an Undergraduate for the summer of 2018/19. Our program runs from the 3rd December 2018 to the 22nd February 2019. You will be challenged and offered unique opportunities to:

  • Learn and excel in your day to day work, supported by passionate leaders
  • Gain exposure to world-class operations
  • Undertake a project relevant to your degree that you will own and deliver
  • Grow personally and professionally in a dynamic, inclusive and supportive culture
  • Extend your network with global colleagues
  • Our Vacation Program is a pathway to the 2020 Graduate Program

We're targeting penultimate year students for roles at our Illawarra Coal Operation in Wollongong, NSW who have studied:

  • Mining Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

You will need to be in your penultimate year, set to graduate by December 2019, of a relevant university course and have the right to live and work in Australia. You need to be willing to complete a medical assessment. You will be available to participate in interviews in September and commence work for a 12 week period from December 3rd 2018. You will be based in the Illawarra region for the duration of your vacation program.

We are always seeking people who share our values to join our team. Our people are fundamental to our success. We're focused on creating an inclusive workplace, with the right people in the right roles, who are engaged, empowered and appropriately rewarded.

We look forward to receiving your application and exploring this opportunity with you very soon.

Pros and cons of working at South32 AU

Pros

  • Flexibility to choose your own career path, support to follow that direction. A variety of different roles within a graduate program. The people I work with are the best.

  • Opportunity to work in different areas and enabled to pursue interests aligned to your career goals and personal values.

  • Flexibility, I enjoyed the people I work with.

  • Good environment. Most inclusive mine that I've experienced. Employees seem to have a happy home and healthy relationships.

  • Company values, colleagues, exposure to interesting projects, company direction at an executive level.

Cons

    • The graduate program continues to grow, towards the beginning of my employment there was little structure, although this is improving.

    • The lack of diversity in age and cultural background.

    • It would be good to talk to more people who have just gone through/going through the grad program.

    • Often work overtime (more like shift work) and don't get paid for it.

    • Travel for work (long hours), salary is low compared with peers.
