At Thomson Geer, we look for law students who have excelled academically, are client-focused, commercially minded, and work well in a team environment.   We are especially keen to talk to students who have an additional technical degree!  If your ambitions are to develop a career in commercial law and you possess the drive to make your ambitions a reality, then we want to hear from you!

Our clients include companies in banking and finance, construction, energy and resources, healthcare, telecommunications, property development, wealth management, tax, gaming and leisure, and media, broadcasting and entertainment.

Our areas of practice in Brisbane:

  • Banking & Finance
  • Construction
  • Corporate & Commercial
  • Dispute Resolution & Litigation
  • Employment & Safety
  • Environment & Planning
  • Insolvency, Recovery & Restructuring
  • Intellectual Property
  • Property & Development
  • Superannuation

The program:

We offer a structured four-week program where clerks learn through a combination of hands-on experience, training, coaching, and observation.  There are opportunities for our clerks to continue working with us in casual paralegal and administrative positions in between the clerkship and graduate programs (subject, of course, to study loads).

All of our clerks have the opportunity to:

  • Attend client meetings
  • Observe court proceedings
  • Conduct legal research
  • Develop technical skills in areas such as drafting, due diligence, and discovery
  • Participate in team meetings, training, and continuing legal education programs

You will be supported by a supervising partner, a mentor, and a secretary.  Our well-resourced corporate services team will be there to assist throughout the program.

Clerks are also encouraged to participate in firm social events - Friday night drinks, the Christmas party, and other social and sporting activities. We want to ensure that you not only gain valuable experience from your clerkship but also have fun doing so!

Students who complete a clerkship with the firm will be eligible to be considered for a position in the firm's next graduate program, commencing in 2022. This program runs for 12 months and includes rotations among different practice areas to help determine the area of law which best suits you.

The application process:

If your ambition is to develop a career in commercial law and you possess the drive to make your ambitions a reality, then we want to hear from you.  If you also have a desire to work interstate one day, let us know!  We welcome the opportunity to assist our team members with personal career development.

Applications should be made through the "Apply now" button or the firm's website prior to 5 pm Friday 27th March 2020 and addressed to Danielle Schmidt, People & Development Manager.

We conduct a multi-stage recruitment process, with candidates participating in a research task and video interview assessment process and a networking/information evening at the firm.  We encourage you to review our website for firm information and contact us with any questions you have throughout our recruitment process.

Offers will be made on Monday 18th May 2019, as per the Queensland Law Society Vacation Clerkship Guidelines.

The 2020/21 Thomson Geer Brisbane Summer Clerkship will consist of two 4-week programs: approximately 23 November - 18 December 2020 (Program 1) and 11 January to 5 February 2021 (Program 2).
