Application Process & Interviews at Western Power

The process is very simple. Two interviews. Behavioural and technical.

More than one person is in the room during the interview. The interviewers will ask about your professional history and seek examples where you have applied a specific skill set.

Simple for me. Worked at the company while studying, completed a straightforward interview and was hired after.

Selection for interview. And then once the interview was completed, I received an offer maybe 1 or 2 weeks later

Pre-interview on-line aptitude testing/screening followed by a single interview with two senior engineers (no HR representative) followed by an offer of employment a few days later.

Online assessments and phone interview. and face to face interview

Felt last minute and rushed - could be more organised and structured.

Questions related to the main project I am involved in.

I was asked about the typical components for an electricity network, from generation to load. There were about 3 or 4 technical questions, but the one I remember was regarding the impedance of different sized transformers and calculating their pu values.

Usual behavioural questions and technical questions in the interviews.

I was asked to talk about my experience, leadership, strengths and weaknesses, about me as a person, and what would make me a successful employee.

Both technical and behavioural questions.

Name a time when you displayed (skill) in the workplace Solve a technical problem

-Western Power's system voltage levels. -Explanation of Active vs Reactive power -Why do I want to work for Western Power -Elaboration of my final Year Project. -Turning a bad work situation into a positive

If you have any kind of experience in the industry, do mention that.

Think of examples where you have applied particular skills such as problem solving, working with difficult people etc.

Interviewing for a power utility company, ensure you know your latest formulas from power engineering. Definitely have a passion for where you want to go, it will be noticed in your interview.

Be genuine, consider your own work experience, what you have learned and how you can apply that to continue growing and learning into the future. Consider the skills you have and how they could make you a successful candidate. Most importantly, be honest with who you are and what you have to offer.

Power industry experience is well regarded.

prepare for behaviour questions since that is most of your interview.

Be passionate about what you can provide for the business.

-Demonstrate through examples that you are someone who is ready to learn and be very appreciative of the opportunities that come your way. -Ensure you have a basic understanding of the electrical network and our current challenges e.g. VERY high solar penetration, VERY long distance network that supplies few customers and its not inter-connected to any other grid. Also, it's good to know the difference between Western Power and Synergy.
