Pros & Cons

  • Lots of team support, positive working culture.
  • Western Power has a very supportive culture, where almost everyone I have worked with are willing to give up some of their time to help me learn and develop.
  • Working flexibility, diverse workplace, friendly teammates
  • Being part of the Western Power Graduate Program allows me to experience different areas of engineering within the industry. It will allow you to then decide which area you really want to see your career out in.
  • The graduate program allows me to gain experience in a number of different areas of the business with 6-monthly rotations for the duration of a 3-year program.
  • A wealth of in-house technical knowledge.
  • Variety of work to be exposed to as a graduate. Gaining experience to further myself in my career
  • Flexibility Opportunities
  • Working with the Chamber of Commerce of Industry gives you a very broad view of the Power Industry. This Program rotates you through major power industry companies. It covers generation and transmission, which is essential for a new grad to get their head around both aspects of Power industry.
  • Range of roles Opportunity for career growth
  • Didn't provide customer engagement training
  • The business can be quite 'siloed' and so its not always clear to people what other teams do. The rotating graduate program has been a lens into the issue, but a big part of the solution.
  • Big organisation, a little unorganised at times
  • Each rotation is around 6 months, some more technically involved areas would possibly require more than 6 months to get you to an adequate level to do some decent work In that space. But even if you did go to those areas, and wasn't part of a major project, you still learn quite a lot which may increase your technical abilities for future rotations or after the graduate program.
  • Learning to navigate numerous corporate systems and learn who is responsible for what ie: learning how to "get things done".
  • Site visits are infrequent in my current role.
  • The rotation period is sometimes not enough to settle into the environment of the host organisation.
  • Difficulties implementing changes due to the size of the organisation

My role changes every 6 months, as part of the graduate program. Every 6 months I'm exposed to different teams, doing work for that team and the teams would train me to get to a level adequate enough to be helpful to the team and carry out day to day responsibilities within the team.
