The Master of Museum and Heritage Studies at ANU provides the unique opportunity to articulate with the Indiana University to complete a double degree with the Master of Arts – Arts Administration. These degrees draw on strong connections with cultural and collecting institutions in Australia and the United States. The double degree aims to prepare you for an innovative career in both Museum Curatorial practice (ANU) and Arts Administration (IU). At the ANU, students will learn traditional curatorship and collections management, while also being introduced to new areas impacting on national and international cultural policy such as social inclusion, citizenship and community engagement, social activism and museums, Indigenous curation and collection, and innovative visitor and audience studies. At IU, students will gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to become an effective arts advocate and leader of change; students will be introduced to a range of core skills in the areas of business, marketing, policy and management, as well as a thorough understanding of the arts sector.

Entry requirements

A cognate Bachelor degree or international equivalent with an average mark of at least 65%, or completion of 30 SPEA credits towards the Master of Arts – Arts Administration as listed in the award rules for this degree.Applicants must apply separately to Indiana University and the Australian National University for admission to this Double Master Degree program. Offers of admission to Master of Arts – Arts Administration [IU]/Master of Museum and Heritage Studies [ANU] may be conditional upon admission to the corresponding program at Indiana University. If this condition cannot be met, applicants may be offered Master of Museum and Heritage Studies in its place.

Assessment of Qualifications

Unless otherwise indicated, ANU will accept all Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications or international equivalents that meet or exceed the published admission requirements of our programs, provided all other admission requirements are also met. Where an applicant has more than one completed tertiary qualification, ANU will base assessment on the qualification that best meets the admission requirements for the program. ANU uses a 7-point Grade Point Average (GPA) scale. All qualifications submitted for admission at ANU will be converted to this common scale, which will determine if an applicant meets our published admission requirements. Unless otherwise indicated, where an applicant has more than one completed tertiary qualification, ANU will calculate the GPA for each qualification separately. ANU will base assessment on the best GPA of all completed tertiary qualifications of the same level or higher.

Application for course credit

Credit for prior study at AQF levels 7 and 8 is not available towards this program.
