Pros & Cons

  • The new building is fantastic and the leadership in my team sets realistic expectations and timeframes with our clients.
  • Autonomy, collegiate atmosphere, non-hierarchical, development
  • Great access to very experienced individuals and leaders of the industry
  • The people. It is fantastic to work in an environment where the people truly support each other to achieve their potential.
  • The type of work that I get to do (the biggest projects for great clients) and the people I work with (my Partners are the best in the industry in their fields).
  • The firm does not celebrate its achievements enough. I feel that Minter Ellison is as good as any law firm in town, however that message has not always been effectively communicated to the market.
  • Long hours from time to time
  • Longer hours at work mean sacrificing some extracurricular activities in order to optimise work produce to supervisors and/or clients
  • There are times when you don't have much control of workflow.
  • The long working hours which is expected across the legal profession

There seems to be opportunities to progress in the company based on experience and capability - something I look forward to experiencing

We have a lot of pro bono work and clients, and we also participate in a mentoring program each summer where we help children with reading

Culture

Culture
The company's culture both in the office and after hours is consistent - everyone is intelligent, personable, interesting and friendly. The structure and hierarchy seems to vary across different practice groups but I certainly get the feel that a 'flatter' structure is encouraged. Cooperation and teamwork is strongly encouraged, with lawyers from different practice groups often working with each other on the same matter. A collegiate environment is fostered with the new rooms and facilities making group work much easier in the new office. The employees here are also very social people - whether it's impromptu Thursday night drinks or a firm-wide organised event, many people are always keen to have a good time and to get to know their colleagues on more personal level.

Diversity

Diversity
Minters is better than many other firms with regards to its clerkship intakes - it looks beyond the typical USYD/UNSW candidates to less popular universities. More should be done to enhance the programs at these universities to attract candidates.

Satisfaction
I provide support to associate, senior associate, special counsel and partners by drafting advice, conducting legal research, attending meetings, corresponding with clients and managing documents in larger matters. I have contact with the senior practitioners and clients on a day to day basis. I am encouraged to share my ideas and speak up if I think there are alternative or better ways to get the job done or to asset the client. I feel trusted and respected and appropriately guided, although given tasks that challenge me and give me opportunities to demonstrate by capabilities.

Senior partners are very available to juniors. For example, I have a good working relationship with the Managing Partner, which is not unusual.

No issues with dress code. We are in need of laptops in order to make working more flexible. Access to emails from personal mobiles would be really helpful for when out of the office.

Understand the different practice areas and the deals they have worked on. Be realistic about long hours and the physical toll they can take. Make plans to keep your health and social relationships whilst focusing on your career and development. Talk to people within the firm or who have left the firm to get an understanding of culture.

I think the rates are fair and bonuses are a good motivating factor. I don't have too much experience in the industry and am unable to comment too much on the differences with other firms.

Training
The graduate training program is very comprehensive and well organised. There is 1 week of workshops before we start and continuing workshops throughout our time as a graduate. I've picked up technological skills, networking tips, how to be an effective junior in a team and plenty of soft skills. PIC has training within the group which really helps in getting to know the industry and understanding the main types of projects we work on.

Work Hours
I work between 50-70 hours per week depending on deal flow. Busy periods result in longer hours, however when it is quiet you are not expected to stay in the office for 'face-time'.

Not sure. Have not noticed any specific initiatives above the standard for an organisation of this size.
