As a graduate you can only apply for non-graduate roles after two years, once that happens you are generally "snapped up" into a position which suits you (not necessarily the first one you apply for). After that you can get promotions once you have the necessary skills and experience.

Culture
There is a lot of respect for everyone's knowledge and perspectives here. The senior staff have been around a long time and are always happy to share their stories with younger colleagues or help us out with making a decision. They are also keen to hear our perspectives and thoughts coming into the organisation as new graduates. The third-year and former graduates are supportive of the new graduates and helped us to settle in.

I work across two different teams. As a distribution planner I prepare plans for transferring load away from equipment for maintenance etc., assist with load forecasting, prepare specifications for substation upgrades and identify when the network needs to be augmented to accommodate customer loads. Mid-way through my current 6-month graduate rotation I was also given the opportunity to work in the generation planning team assessing embedded generation enquiries.

It's enough to live a comfortable life and plan for the future. I enjoy the work for its own sake so as long as that's covered it's not a big factor. The bonus program is small but a good framework for personal development and getting feedback. Graduates are given the opportunity to move to country SA for six months if they want to work in a country depot for one rotation. They are assisted with accommodation and given an allowance to do this.

Technical training for graduates is done on-the-job through working with colleagues. I am also completing a Cert IV in Project Management. We have training sessions to assist us in our personal development (e.g. time management, teamwork) which I have found very helpful.

We have flexi time so I usually work an extra half hour each day so I can have a day off every now and then for commitments outside of work. I have been offered overtime but I get to choose when I do it and how much.
