Pros & Cons

  • Big projects, a variety of people to work with, lots of extra benefits like gym rebates, health and life insurance and various extracurriculars to join.
  • Flexibility of work hours, and the flexibility to choose what I would like to work on
  • Opportunities to work on the biggest infrastructure projects in New Zealand
  • The work culture and the team around me is supportive and very knowledgeable. Everyone gets along well and is quite social. Work varies and there are plenty of big opportunities that come by.
  • Project Variability + Global Reach Company Culture + Environment
  • As with all big companies, there are a lot of people vying for the same opportunities and there are a lot of steps to complete to achieve simple tasks.
  • Sometimes I haven't had enough work to do and it has been hard to learn design skills as experience depends on what projects are available.
  • Lack of enthusiasm from experienced people to have fun and engage in social activities - can be dispiriting
  • Too much focus on clients and push back on workers
  • Big company, some processes/ procedures can be slow and tedious

Corporate Social Responsibility
I am part of the CSR committee. Australia and NZ plans campaigns together and we also do local activities. Everyone can use 8 hours of volunteer leave per year. Last year I organised a volunteering afternoon at a zoo. We do a lot of fundraising and collection campaigns for charities.

Culture
I like the culture, the people are good and not many work overtime often. the social aspect is good and I do not feel like there is a strong hierarchy

Diversity

Diversity
AECOM has a diversity and inclusion plan which I think focuses mainly on gender equality and LGBT inclusion. I know Australia does a lot for racial reconciliation. AECOM has targets for recruiting females in the graduate intake and female representation in higher management. Parental leave is available for both men and women.

I work mainly on one construction project. My responsibilities are construction monitoring, admin, site inspections, handover processes, responding to queries, etc. I've had some experience on other projects, mainly doing AutoCAD.

Office Work Environment
Quite close to the city & commercial area. I like that the office isn't in the central city. Plenty of bike parking and street parking. Need to pay for a spot in the carpark building. Dress code is very relaxed (smart casual).

Recruitment
Informal interview after being recommended - very smooth with only on-boarding teething issues

Salary
The salary is pretty good, it seems like it is slightly above average for engineering grads.

Training
Most training is informal with the notable exception of health and safety training. Any formal training needs to be applied for well in advance.

Sustainability
AECOM publishes a sustainability report every year and has set global targets on reducing emissions that are aligned with the Paris Agreement. I have also heard that there will be a global launch of 'green teams' to help each office implement the sustainability strategy
