Pros & Cons

  • The place really seems to care for its people. It's a great working environment where your voice is heard and you have plenty of opportunities for professional and personal development.
  • Flexibility with hours and ability to work from home. Open plan and collaborative environment.
  • The firm culture is great. Everyone is very collegiate and people are friends and not just colleagues.
  • We are a growing firm so there are a lot of opportunities to work directly with partners and senior lawyers. 'Learning by doing' is certainly the training approach the firm takes. I had hands on experience in drafting client advices/contracts/pleadings from day one of my graduate program. That said, I never felt unsupported if I found a task particularly challenging. I have found the partners to be really invested in helping me to build a strong foundation of how to practice law, irrespective of practice area.
  • Very progressive, fast moving, receptive to change. Lots of exposure as a junior to the bigger picture of a matter. Free breakfasts and lunchtime fitness classes is a big plus. A growing firm so very positive atmosphere.
  • Lots of good extracurricular stuff. Everyone is nice and approachable.
  • This is nitpicking but sometimes there's a mismatch in the fact that the firm values itself on everyone (including seniors) being approachable and less hierarchical. I occasionally still come across this behaviour. But it is all manageable.
  • The practice is always busy so the hours are long and downtime is rare.
  • Pay
  • Communication and synergy across teams could use some improvement.
  • The inconsistent workload
  • No rotation

While there is a hierarchy in the firm, it is not reflected in how they treat individuals. The hours are reasonable and the firm encourages a work-life balance.

Diversity

Diversity
We have a dedicated diversity and inclusion team that runs initiatives throughout the firm. They're encouraging men to take parental leave; they have made a policy change to pay superannuation to those on parental leave; we provide pro bono advice to minority groups; encouraging flexible working to make work and your life work together better etc.

Office Work Environment
The office space is fairly consistent between offices. It is minimalist, open plan with the introduction of flexi-desking (if appropriate for you) coming on board. This is in line with the Evolve Our Workspace policy which is helping everyone to work flexibly within the office or at home or wherever. As for dress code, we have a policy called dress for your day. And it's honestly followed. People will show up in jeans and a t-shirt if they're not going to court or meeting clients. I'm in a transactional team where the need to dress up is minimal so I just keep a suit in the office in case it's ever needed.

Recruitment
The graduate program involved an application and two interviews. The application was very standard and required answering some questions about yourself and how you identify with the firm's values.

Work Hours
The firm does encourage maintaining a healthy work-life balance. If you do not have much work on, the firm does not expect presenteeism. If the team is very busy, the hours will necessarily be longer to deliver an on schedule result for a client.

Sustainability
We're hoping to work towards being carbon neutral. Although I'm not sure how this is being achieved. Little things like reducing the number of bins available so that plastic bin bags aren't always being thrown out, bins for soft plastics, recycling and regular waste etc.
