Pros & Cons

  • Working on a wide variety of projects with varying teams of people within the organisation
  • The people, the interesting and challenging work, the ability to make a positive influence
  • Working on a huge variety of different projects over the course of a year. Learning heaps of new things all the time, everyday.
  • Company culture, colleagues and the work
  • Flexibility, self-management, great culture
  • Never feeling like you fully know what you're doing.
  • Long hours, high pressure
  • The toll on the lives of our grads and more junior staff is not recognised, as it is said to be comparatively "not as bad" as the big four. Not only do the long hours take a toll, but it is also a double hit to feel that you need to just suck it up because other companies have it worse.

Career Prospects
Clear review processes but unclear trajectories.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
Dedicated "green team", socially conscious work and we run a series of pro-bono projects every year

Culture
9.2
Culture
Flat structure where everyone's opinion is valued. Have the chance to work with bright minds across the organisation. Strong emphasis placed on culture and it shows, every day at work is fun.

Diversity
We have made significant improvements over the last 18 months in this area but we still have places to go. We have an LGBTIQ+ group starting up, and a mental health working committee. We do a very poor job of this.

Satisfaction
Currently, I am working on projects across the public policy, economics and organisational performance and leadership streams of Nous' work. The work is varied, keeps you on your feet and most importantly, keeps you interested

Management
We each have one main mentor/manager here at Nous. They provide us with performance feedback (collated from the rest of the organisation), answer our questions, assist us to navigate potentially tricky situations, help us pursue our development goals, etc.

Office Work Environment
At the moment it is small but practical. We are moving into a new office soon which will be a lot better, more efficient and spacious

Recruitment

Recruitment
Nous has a fairly complicated interview process. From memory, there was a generic skills assessment, a take-home case study, an interview with HR and an interview with the local office. There were a lot of questions which were asking about demonstrations of problem-solving and collaboration skills. There was also another case study.

Salary
Generally happy with the salary. It is higher than big 4 consulting and lower than 'MBB consulting (although MBB consulting requires double the hours). Bonus is generous and provided equally to all employees, regardless of level.

Training

Training
I have not done much training yet. We get a big week of training at Induction when we first start which is excellent (if a little full-on). There are then short training sessions run sporadically throughout the year which everyone can attend. Nous has a great attitude around professional development though. If there is some skill you particularly want to build, you just need to discuss with your mentor and there would be few barriers to this I expect. In quiet times, we are actively encouraged to seek out development opportunities.

Work Hours
The contract at Nous is 200 hours a month for all levels of consultants (up to our Principals). This is on average pretty accurate. As with any consulting firm, there are busy weeks and less busy weeks. The organisation allows great levels of flexibility and trust. You are trusted to work wherever and whenever you want, as long as you are doing right by your project teams and the client. We work at high intensity, so you have to be ready to work out. Fortunately, Nous is not like other firms which require 80+hr weeks.
