To be admitted to the Master of Philosophy program you will be required to have completed at least a three-year Australian undergraduate degree or equivalent with a result of at least H2A.

You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate that you have research experience equivalent to these qualifications, for example, through postgraduate study.

Applications for course credit

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit. Applicants with a Graduate Diploma or Bachelor degree with Honours in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 48 units (one year) of credit.

Places are limited in each study-destination country. Applicants will be ranked on the following criteria:

• Demonstrated ability in the language of the destination country
• ANU GPA

ANU offers rank adjustments for a number of adjustment factors, including for high achievement in nationally strategic senior secondary subjects and for recognition of difficult circumstances that students face in their studies. Rank adjustments are applied to Bachelor degree applicants with an ATAR at or above 70. Points are awarded in accordance with the approved schedules, and no more than 15 points (maximum 5 subject/performance-based adjustments, maximum 10 equity-based adjustments and maximum 5 Elite Athlete adjustments) will be awarded. At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not automatically guarantee entry. 

Applicants must present a Bachelor degree or international equivalent

• with a grade point average of at least 5.5/7.0
• with at least 8 courses in the field of Physics and/or Engineering and/or Mathematics (minimum grade point average of 5.5/7.0 in these subjects)

Students must achieve a minimum 70% weighted average mark in the initial 48 units of coursework and have the approval of the supervisor for the research project to continue to the research component.

In line with the university's admissions policy and strategic plan, an assessment for admission may include competitively ranking applicants on the basis of specific academic achievement, English language proficiency and diversity factors. 

Academic achievement & English language proficiency

The minimum academic requirement for full entry and enrolment is a Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.5/7.0. 

However, applicants will first be ranked on a GPA ('GPA1') that is calculated using all but the last semester (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes. 

If required, ranking may further be confirmed on the basis of: 

• a GPA ('GPA2') calculated on the penultimate and antepenultimate semesters (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes; and/or

• demonstrating higher-level English language proficiency. 

Prior to enrolment in this ANU program, all students who gain entry will have their Bachelor degree reassessed, to confirm minimum requirements were met.

·        Applicants will be expected to submit a portfolio, and participate in an interview process as detailed on the 3A Institute website (www.3ainstitute.org); and

·        A Bachelor degree with honours or international equivalent, or higher qualification, with a minimum GPA of 4/7

·        A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5/7; or

·        A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 4/7 and a minimum of 3 years full-time, relevant work experience; or

·        GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), completed no more than 5 years before the time of application, with a minimum score of 550 (minimum 5.0 in Analytical Writing) and a minimum of 3 years full-time, relevant work experience; or

·        GRE General test, completed no more than 5 years before the time of application, with a minimum score of 150 for Verbal Reasoning, 150 for Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 in Analytical Writing and a minimum of 3 years full-time, relevant work experience; or

·        A minimum of 10 years of full time, relevant work experience at ANZCO Skill Level 1(see below).

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis. Entry into the Bachelor of Design is based on ACT or NSW HSC equivalent and interview and portfolio. Australian and New Zealand applicants apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) and international applicants lodge an application directly with ANU. Once an application has been lodged, applicants are required to register for an interview and upload a portfolio on the ANU School of Art & Design website at: soa.anu.edu.au/how-apply/undergraduate-applications.

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis. Admission to undergraduate degrees is based on meeting the ATAR requirement or an equivalent rank derived from the following qualifications:

• An Australian year 12 qualification or international equivalent; OR
• A completed Associate Diploma, Associate Degree, AQF Diploma, Diploma, AQF Advanced Diploma, Graduate Certificate or international equivalent; OR
• At least one standard full-time year (1.0 FTE) in a single program of degree level study at an Australian higher education institution or international equivalent; OR
• An approved tertiary preparation course unless subsequent study is undertaken.
