Australian National University (ANU) Courses

To be admitted to the Master of Philosophy program you need to have completed an Australian Bachelor Degree with H1 (first class) or H2A (upper second class) Honours or its international equivalent, or a Master Degree with a significant (Honours equivalent) research thesis component. There must also be an identified supervisor at ANU.

All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students.

You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate that you have a background equivalent to these qualifications.

Academic achievement & English language proficiency

The minimum academic requirement for full entry and enrolment is a Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0. 

However, applicants will first be ranked on a GPA ('GPA1') that is calculated using all but the last semester (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes. 

If required, ranking may further be confirmed on the basis of: 

• a GPA ('GPA2') calculated on the penultimate and antepenultimate semesters (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes; and/or

• demonstrating higher-level English language proficiency. 

Prior to enrolment in this ANU program, all students who gain entry will have their Bachelor degree reassessed, to confirm minimum requirements were met.

Unless otherwise indicated, where an applicant has more than one completed tertiary qualification, ANU will calculate the GPA for each qualification separately. ANU will base assessment on the best GPA of all completed tertiary qualifications of the same level or higher.

Applications for course credit

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 24 units (one semester) of credit. 

Applicants with a Graduate Diploma or Bachelor degree with Honours in a cognate discipline may be eligible for up to 48 units (one year) of credit.

Applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree are not eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Laws (Honours). Admission into the ANU Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is highly competitive with entry reserved for undergraduate applicants only.  

Graduate applicants are advised to apply for the Juris Doctor. This program is specifically tailored to graduate students and satisfies the academic component for admission as a legal practitioner in Australia.

Domestic applicants

School leavers will be assessed on:

• the minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) requirement or equivalent for this program,

• the co-curricular or service requirement, and

• any program specific requirements that are listed below.

Non school leavers:

a) will be assessed on:

• the minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) requirement or equivalent for this program,

b) Non school leavers who:

• complete a recognised Australian (or equivalent) post-secondary qualification, or

• complete one standard full-time year (1.0 FTE) of an Australian (or equivalent) degree qualification, or

• complete an approved tertiary preparation course/program without undertaking any further study, will be assessed on the basis of an equivalent selection rank that is calculated upon application. Non school leavers must also meet any program specific requirements that are listed below.

International applicants

Applicants who complete a recognised secondary/senior secondary/post-secondary/tertiary sequence of study will be assessed on the basis of an equivalent selection rank that is calculated upon application. An AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Politics Philosophy and Economics from the ANU, or equivalent from another institution, completed within the last two years:

1. with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units (i.e. 0.75 EFTSL), excluding 1000-level courses (i.e. introductory undergraduate courses), with the highest marks, which must include 18 units from PHIL2116 and ECON3056 and one of the following: ECON2141, POLS2125 or POLS2130.
2. Written approval of an identified supervisor for the research project/thesis
3. and the satisfaction of any further requirements specified in the relevant honours specialisation.

2. with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70  per cent calculated from the 36 units (i.e. 0.75 EFTSL) of courses in cognate disciplines, excluding 1000-level courses (i.e. introductory undergraduate courses), with the highest marks.

3. with the following courses or equivalent: 6 units from completion of ARCH3000 Research Design and Analysis in Archaeology which may be double counted towards completion of the Archaeological Practice major

4. with the written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis THES4102

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy program you will be required to have completed at least a four-year Australian degree or equivalent with a result of H2A.

Admission to a Doctor of Philosophy program is normally granted to applicants holding a Master by research degree or a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours or Second Class Honours Division A. Admission can be granted to applicants who demonstrate a background equivalent to these qualifications.
