This program is restricted to approved Defence personnel who hold a Bachelors of Laws, Juris Doctor or international equivalent qualifying the candidate for admission to legal practice in Australia, as well as a Graduate Certificate of Military Law from ANU. As an AQF Level 8 qualification, the Graduate Diploma of Military Law requires one year of full-time-equivalent study; however, graduates of the AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate of Military Law will be granted credit for one half year of full-time-equivalent study.

Applicants may be eligible for credit for admission for formal, informal and nonformal (which includes work experience) learning. Applications for credit for admission will be assessed by the Dean of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) and the ANU Program Director and will consider the equivalence of extensive appropriate practical, professional or scholarly experience. Admission requires acceptance as a candidate by both ANU and ANZSOG.

Application for course credits

Applicants who have completed a degree in a cognate discipline from a recognised university may be eligible to receive coursework credit towards this degree, in line with the ANU Coursework Award Rules.

A Bachelor of Design degree from the ANU, or equivalent from another institution, completed within the last two years:

with a weighted average mark of at least 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units of courses with the highest marks, excluding 1000-level courses, from the following subject areas:

ARTV Visual Arts

DESA Design Arts

DESN Design

and with the written approval of an identified supervisor for THES4105 Thesis. 

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis. Admission to undergraduate degrees is based on meeting the ATAR requirement or an equivalent rank derived from the following qualifications:

• An Australian year 12 qualification or international equivalent; OR

• A completed Associate Diploma, Associate Degree, AQF Diploma, Diploma, AQF Advanced Diploma, Graduate Certificate or international equivalent; OR

• At least one standard full-time year (1.0 FTE) in a single program of degree level study at an Australian higher education institution or international equivalent; OR

• An approved tertiary preparation course unless subsequent study is undertaken.

To be admitted to our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program you need to have completed an Australian Bachelor Degree with at least Upper Second Class Honours (First Class Honours is usually required) or its international equivalent, or a Graduate Diploma or Master Degree with a significant research thesis component. There must also be a supervisor at ANU, normally a member of the Fenner School's academic staff, who has agreed to supervise your research.

You must also meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students.

You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate that you have a background equivalent to these qualifications.

Economics

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy, Economics PhD program you are required to have achieved:

• First Class Honours from an Australian Go8 university or equivalent

Or

• A minimum of an H2A degree with a minimum weighted average of 75 from an Australian Go8 university or equivalent in economics (not business or accounting).

A degree at the same level with honours in mathematics or statistics is considered equivalent, provided the candidate has an undergraduate major in economics with at least a distinction in a third-year economics course.

Candidates are required to have a background in mathematical economics at least at the level of the course ECON6015 Optimization Techniques for Economists or IDEC8015 Mathematical Methods in Applied Economics. For those students who do not have this background, the Research School of Economics in the College of Business and Economics offers a summer course called Mathematical Techniques for Advanced Economic Analysis. The examination from this summer course (which occurs just before the academic year starts) will be used as a mathematical economics entry test.

It is also assumed that candidates have a background in basic econometrics at least at the level of IDEC8017 Econometric Techniques or EMET8005. Candidates who do not satisfy this requirement may be permitted to satisfy it while enrolled in Part A, but the course will not be counted towards the Part A coursework requirement.

Policy and Governance (POGO)

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy, Policy and Governance program you are required to have achieved:

• First Class Honours from an Australian Go8 university or equivalent

Or

• A minimum of an H2A degree with a minimum weighted average of 75 from an Australian Go8 university or equivalent.

Or

• A Master’s Degree in social science or related fields of social studies with a proven academic publication record as a first author. These will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate that you have a background equivalent to these qualifications.

Resources, Environment and Development (RE&D)

To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy, Resource, Environment and Development program you are required to have achieved:

• First Class Honours from an Australian Go8 university or equivalent

Or

• A minimum of an H2A degree with a minimum weighted average of 75 from an Australian Go8 university or equivalent.

Or

• A Master’s Degree in social science or related fields of social studies with a proven academic publication record as a first author. These will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

You may be granted admission if you can demonstrate that you have a background equivalent to these qualifications.
