Pros & Cons

  • Being able to work with a range of prestigious, exciting and complex clients; ability to rotate across a number practice groups to sample experience from across the firm; strong investment in my development as a graduate lawyer from day 1.
  • Strong graduate training curriculum and a very supportive culture.
  • The inclusive, diverse and friendly work environment.
  • High level of administrative and other support, outstanding training opportunities, exposure to a wide-range of work and clients.
  • Ashurst offers extensive support for the professional development of their staff. My colleagues are highly skilled yet down to earth. I value these qualities in my employer and fellow employees.
  • Sometimes deadlines are very tight resulting in long hours.
  • The coffee in the staff kitchen!
  • The greatest challenges are finding your way in a large team and a global firm. However, many opportunities to develop these skills -that the hours can be demanding.
  • As a large firm, it is difficult to get to know everyone who works in your office. However, as you rotate through three different practice groups graduate, you are placed in a position where you can meet your fellow colleagues gradually.
  • At times, the hours can be long and the deadlines are real, which can be a lot of pressure if that's not the sort of environment you're used to.

My colleagues are supportive and happy to assist if I am unsure of something. There is a hierarchy at the firm, however, the partners are generally approachable to assist graduates.

Diversity

Diversity
The firm has strong diversity committees and champions for women in the law, LGBTI and indigenous issues. There are strong programs in place for female mentorship and an acknowledgement and response to issues of female underrepresentation in higher management. The firm tries very hard to remove biases from recruitment and do recruit from a diverse pool of law students, not just exclusively from seasonal clerkships.

Training
The knowledge and education component of the Ashurst Graduate Programme is phenomenal. We have almost weekly graduate training sessions on top of the usual training sessions available to the whole firm. I also find my colleagues' willingness to take time out to give me on-the-job training to be particularly excellent.

No pressure to stay back unless needed. Expectations to perform well are high, but this is not to be done at the expense of your well-being. If matters require late and weekend contact hours, this does not go unnoticed.

I have personally been involved in the Environment Committee. We work on reducing the footprint of the firm and running educational seminars on issues affecting our employees.
