Pros & Cons
Working alongside great scientific and technical staff to enable research and deliver results that are utilised in 'the real world' in a relatively short time frame has been fantastic. I've learned a huge amount about nuclear science and its applications, and been trusted with important lab work, analysis, software development and more.
Onsite sports.
Being the only nuclear reactor in Australia, the largest benefit of ANSTO is the unique work you undertake and the experiences that you can't obtain anywhere else in Australia.
The unique science and engineering challenges. It is a really great place to learn about a whole load of different industries and really expand your skills.
Participating in scientific research Some self-direction in project/rotation. Encouraging learning environment.Casual vibe in the workplace and friendly colleagues. Good flexibility with work times.
Difficult location to get to, depending where you live.
Being home to a nuclear reactor, the location of ANSTO is quite far away from the centre of Sydney and there are limited options for getting to work through public transport.
The low rate of employee turnover means that younger generations find it difficult to advance within the company.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere else at this stage in my career, the career progression in terms of acquiring skills and knowledge are second to none. In terms of promotion I think there are some ceilings that perhaps need to be lifted in order to recognize the true value of some employees.
There is no after hours culture at my company, but the culture at work is one of working together and helping each other out. I think there are areas of the business where this might not be as apparent, but I try to interact with everyone with an open mind and friendly manner and that works 9 times out of 10.
There are a number of programmes and initiatives that aim to increase diversity and inclusion. There is still work to be done in these areas, but overall it is a relatively diverse company and is inclusive to all people regardless of race, sex or sexuality.
Electrical engineer/project management. There is a nice blend between the technical electrical engineering detailed design work and project management oriented work. Engineering involves mostly design work, understanding how many components work together to form a system, then the project management skills are to source those materials, putting together documents and placing provisions for the system to become a reality.
My supervisor in my rotation is a very good manager and mentor and communicates with me very regularly. They are helpful and encouraging, assisting me with my work and collaborating on developing projects. She has helped me set goals for my time and provided feedback which is useful.
1. A written application with CV and transcript 2. A video interview: around 5 really short answers recorded with webcam 3. A phone interview with an ANSTO person in your field, including some more specific questions 4. An assessment centre: group exercises and an individual interview
Questions ranged from personal qualities and values, to 'give me an example...' to gauge technical knowledge
Don't worry if you don't have much experience in nuclear (how can you?) but read around Australia's position on key nuclear issues. Get across the basics of (some of) what ANSTO does (which is a lot).
Pay is quite good for a graduate level employee. There are no pay bonuses in my current contract.
Lunch time sport. There is the option to play soccer, badminton, touch football, squash, swimming, etc. onsite during lunch breaks.
